Abstract

This study delves into the intricate tradition of hand-block print fabrics across three pivotal regions in India: Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. These areas are renowned for their contributions to the art of hand-block printing, each offering unique styles that are deeply entwined with their cultural heritage. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this paper examines historical documents, conducts extensive interviews with local artisans, and undertakes field observations to draw a comprehensive picture of the current practices. The findings reveal the diverse techniques and motifs characteristic of each region, reflecting local mythologies and the environment and assessing the craft's significant socio-economic impact on the communities involved. Amid the advent of industrialisation and changing market demands, this research highlights artisans' challenges and emphasises the crucial need for measures to preserve this invaluable cultural heritage. The study calls for concerted efforts towards education, sustainable economic support, and broader global recognition to ensure the continuity and prosperity of hand-block printing traditions.
