Abstract

Play-based learning has emerged as one of the most influential pedagogical frameworks in contemporary early childhood education, positioned at the intersection of developmental psychology, neuroscience, and classroom practice. play-based learning approaches contribute to the cognitive development of preschool children aged three to six years. The review traces the theoretical foundations of play pedagogy from Vygotskian and constructivist traditions to contemporary spectrum-based models that distinguish free play, guided play, and playful instruction. Drawing on experimental studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analytic evidence, the paper evaluates the impact of play-based approaches on core cognitive domains, including executive function, language and vocabulary acquisition, early mathematical reasoning, and self-regulation. The evidence indicates that guided play, in which adults scaffold children's exploration toward learning goals while preserving child agency, produces cognitive outcomes that are equal or superior to direct instruction and consistently superior to unstructured play alone. The review also analyzes the pedagogical role of the teacher, the tension between academic accountability pressures and play pedagogy, and the methodological limitations of the existing evidence base, including definitional inconsistency and a shortage of longitudinal designs. The paper concludes that play is not a diversion from learning but a primary mechanism through which young children construct knowledge, and it outlines an agenda for future research encompassing longitudinal tracking, cross-cultural validation, digital play environments, and teacher professional development.
