Changing Dimensions of Haryana Politics: Two Decades of Realignment (2004–2024)

This paper discuss how Haryana's party system transformed between 2004 and 2024. The regional balance completely shifted. Before this, from 2004 to 2014, local political parties held total control. Deep-rooted agrarian dynasties ran the show. We look through a historical institutionalist lens. Combined with hard electoral data, we study this evolution across three distinct acts. First came the peak of single-party dominance by the Congress party (2004–2014). Then BJP disrupted the status quo from 2014 to 2019. They did this by mobilizing non-Jat social groups. By 2024, structural pressures forced a complex numbers game. The state hardened into a highly nationalized, two-sided battleground. This study shows exactly how centralized national party machines ground down traditional rural networks. Legacy family fiefdoms fell apart. We also unpack grassroots friction. The massive farmers' protests played a huge role. Geographic divides shape the state too. The national narrative set the broad boundaries. However, day-to-day power still comes down to a fragile balancing act. Local identities and sub-ethnic alliances still matter.
