The rapid advancement of digital technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and intelligent learning systems has significantly transformed the structure and functioning of higher education institutions. The emergence of Smart Universities and Education 5.0 represents an important shift towards technology-enabled, human-centred, inclusive and sustainable educational ecosystems. The present study examines the conceptual foundations, emerging technological paradigms and institutional implications of digital transformation in higher education. The research adopts a descriptive and analytical methodology based on secondary sources, including scholarly literature, international educational reports and policy documents. It explores the integration of artificial intelligence, learning analytics, smart campus infrastructure, digital governance, personalised learning and competency-based education into university systems. The study further analyses the relationship between technological innovation, academic quality, institutional efficiency and sustainable educational development. Major challenges involving digital inequalities, cybersecurity, data privacy, faculty preparedness, financial constraints and ethical governance are examined. An integrated conceptual framework for Smart Universities and Education 5.0 is proposed, emphasising intelligent infrastructure, innovative pedagogy, digital competencies, institutional leadership and human-centred educational practices. The study concludes that sustainable digital transformation requires coordinated technological investment, institutional reform, professional development and inclusive governance. The proposed framework provides a foundation for future empirical research and strategic policy development in higher education.
