Hyperglycemia-Induced Physiological Trade-Offs: A Comprehensive Review of Nutritional Stress and Fitness Dynamics in Drosophila melanogaster

The paper is a review of the literature analyzing physiological trade-offs due to hyperglycemia under nutritional stress in Drosophila melanogaster. The study, using the available literature and theoretical models, has incorporated the insights of metabolic regulation, life-history theory, and stress physiology to explain how excess dietary sugar impairs the fitness of organism. Metabolic imbalance (impaired insulin signaling, lipid buildup, and elevated oxidative stress) is the result of high-sugar diets. These metabolic imbalances lead to decreased growth efficiencies, morphological changes, and substantial losses in reproductive performance, including reduced fecundity and viability of offspring. The review also mentions the influence of aging in increasing these effects, resulting in an accelerated physiological deterioration and shortened lifespan. Comparative study of past researches indicates that there is consistent evidence of the existence of energy allocation trade-offs whereby survival is prioritized over growth and reproduction during stressful conditions. Generally, the review offers a thorough insight into how hyperglycemia alters physiological priorities, which are related to the decline in fitness in Drosophila melanogaster.
