Abstract

This paper discusses how gut microbiota mediate reproductive decline in high-sugar diet-induced hyperglycemia in Drosophila melanogaster. Flies were reared on control and high-sugar diets and tested across various age groups to determine the changes in the microbial composition, metabolic activity, and reproductive performance. Findings show a tremendous loss in microbial diversity and the replacement of beneficial commensal bacteria with opportunistic taxa under the conditions of hyperglycemia, which results in dysbiosis. Such microbial changes were linked to impaired metabolic efficiency, hormonal imbalance and reduced reproductive fitness including reduced fecundity, ovariole number and offspring fitness. These effects were further enhanced by the aging factor, indicating a synergetic interaction between the diet and the age factor. Altogether, the results present the paramount importance of gut microbiota as a mediator between dietary hyperglycemia and reproductive decline in terms of the significance of maintaining microbial balance to achieve optimum physiological and reproductive health.
