Abstract

This study examines the economic impact of quality seeds on agricultural productivity and farmers’ income in India. Seed is the basic and primary input in agriculture and its quality directly affects germination, crop growth, uniformity, disease resistance, yield level and final production. The study highlights that quality seeds improve crop productivity by increasing germination capacity, maintaining genetic purity, reducing plant mortality and improving the efficiency of other inputs such as fertilizers, irrigation and labour. The analysis shows that higher yield potential, high germination capacity and genetic purity have a strong impact on crop productivity. The study also explains the role of seed replacement rate in improving crop performance, as replacing traditional or farm-saved seeds with certified and quality seeds can increase productivity across crops such as wheat, rice, maize, cotton, vegetables, pulses, oilseeds and millets. Quality seeds also improve farmers’ income by increasing crop yield, marketable surplus, crop quality, farm profitability and income stability. However, the adoption of quality seeds faces challenges such as high seed cost, lack of awareness, limited rural availability, dependence on traditional seeds and fake or poor-quality seeds. The study concludes that strengthening seed certification, subsidy support, seed distribution channels and government programmes can improve farmers’ access to quality seeds and contribute to agricultural growth, food security and rural economic development.
