Effectiveness of Nursing Interventions in the Management of Infertile Couples: A Comprehensive Review

Infertility is becoming an increasingly pressing issue in reproductive health, impacting millions of couples in various ways—physically, psychologically, socially, and emotionally. The struggle to conceive can bring about a wave of stress, anxiety, and even depression, along with social stigma, marital discord, and a diminished quality of life for those affected. While advancements in assisted reproductive technologies have certainly improved outcomes for fertility treatments, managing infertility goes beyond just medical solutions; it also requires thorough psychological and emotional support. This is where nursing professionals step in, playing a crucial role in offering holistic care to couples facing infertility through counselling, emotional support, health education, stress management, treatment guidance, and psychosocial assistance.
This review paper aims to delve into how effective nursing interventions can enhance reproductive health outcomes, emotional well-being, treatment adherence, and overall patient satisfaction among couples dealing with infertility. It draws on findings from both national and international studies that explore infertility, its psychosocial impacts, assisted reproductive treatments, counselling strategies, and nursing care interventions. A thorough examination of literature from various databases, journals, and research articles was conducted to assess how supportive nursing care influences outcomes related to infertility.
The studies reviewed reveal that infertility takes a significant toll on mental health and personal relationships, particularly in cultures where being a parent is closely tied to social acceptance and family identity. Nursing interventions—like emotional counselling, therapeutic communication, educational programs, relaxation techniques, coping skills training, and patient-centred care—have been shown to alleviate psychological distress and enhance the treatment experience for couples facing infertility. Furthermore, the review emphasizes that supportive nursing care not only boosts treatment adherence and patient satisfaction but also fosters emotional adjustment and improves overall quality of life during the infertility treatment journey.
The review highlights how crucial it is to weave structured nursing interventions and psychosocial support into infertility management programs.
