Evaluating the Role of Community-Based Organisations in Enhancing Rural Livelihoods: Evidence from a Survey

This paper investigates the impact of community-based organisations (CBOs) on enhancing rural livelihoods through a structured survey and in-depth case studies across ten rural communities, engaging 300 households. The study examines CBOs' contributions to livelihood diversification, income generation, social cohesion, and identifying prevailing challenges. Findings reveal significant positive impacts of CBOs on rural livelihoods, with notable improvements in income levels, diversification of livelihood sources, and enhanced social cohesion among communities involved with CBO initiatives. However, challenges such as funding sustainability, volunteer management, and adaptation to changing economic conditions were identified. The paper highlights the critical role of CBOs in rural development and calls for enhanced collaboration between CBOs, governments, and international organisations to address these challenges. Recommendations for policy and practice are discussed, along with suggestions for future research to understand further and optimise the role of CBOs in rural development contexts.
