The Role of Small-Scale Entrepreneurs in Employment Generation and Regional Development in Madhya Pradesh: A Study

Abstract

This research paper is based on the topic "The Role of Small-Scale Entrepreneurs in Employment Generation and Regional Development in Madhya Pradesh: A Study." The objective of the study is to analyze the contribution of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in Madhya Pradesh to employment generation, regional development, and socio-economic progress. The study employs a descriptive and analytical research design and utilizes secondary data. Data obtained from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Government of India), Economic Surveys, the Reserve Bank of India, NITI Aayog, and other published research papers and reports have been analyzed.

The study reveals that the MSME sector in Madhya Pradesh is continuously expanding. The number of registered MSME units in the state rose from 2.46 lakh in 2021–22 to 6.85 lakh in 2025–26. During the same period, employment generated by the MSME sector increased from 14.08 lakh to 40.50 lakh. This growth indicates that small-scale enterprises have established themselves as a major source of employment generation in the state. A Pearson Correlation Test was used to test the hypothesis, yielding a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.979 and a p-value of 0.0036. The results demonstrate a very high and statistically significant positive relationship between the development of small-scale enterprises and employment generation. Consequently, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted.

The study also highlights that the MSME sector is not limited merely to providing employment; it plays a pivotal role in rural industrialization, value addition to local resources, women and youth entrepreneurship, income growth, the reduction of migration, and balanced regional development.
